This is a classic of Spanish literature. It is assumed to be a book for children, but it is full of beautiful poetic prose and thought provoking moments. I read it in high school and bought it to teach my grandchildren Spanish. It's a beautiful book. There are also recordings of compositions for the classical guitar by Castelnuovo-Tedesco written to accompany the readings. They create a story time with extra dimensions.Product details

Too abridged
I was introduced to 'Platero y Yo' as a teen in El Salvador. It was seen as a children's book by the adults around me who were also coaching me in my Spanish. I recall that the cover was illustrated as many children's books are with lots of color and obvious appeal to kids. But when you really get down to reading it you find it is a most adult book. Juan Ramon uses the theme of the pet donkey 'Platero' to explore almost every avenue of life, death and everything in between in concise poetic chapters (Juan Ramon Jimenez was a Nobel Prize winning poet, 1956). Platero becomes a kind of counterpoint while the narrator observes all the life around him; in the process Platero grows in personality and life and your affection for him begins to meld with the author's. Read it in Spanish and your vocabulary will leap to higher stage. There is also a fine English translation (Platero and I) in a Singet classic edition. A wonderful book on all levels.
Este cuento tiene más de cien años de haber sido escrito, y su actualidad es permanente. La prosa poética de Juan Ramón Jiménez se siente como estar flotando en aguas tranquilas. Es un libro que debe ser leido por todos los que hablamos el castellano.
Volví a mi infancia y volví a llorar con esta hermosa obra.
La recomiendo ampliamente. Todo lector del Español debe leerlo.
This is a selection of chapters of the book!!!! Beware.
Also, no where in the description of the book reads that the text includes some "end of chapter" activities for english speaking people learning spanish. The reading is not fluid because these annoying excercises.
The text is in Spanish, but it is only a very brief selection of the original book. It is a Spanish learner book, which like the other reviewer points out, has English footnotes and questions after each chapter for reading comprehension. This is NOT a useful copy for a more advanced student in Spanish. The book itself is full of # and other symbols, making it very annoying to read. I do not recommend this version or e-book.
Platero Y Yo es el libro insignia de Juan Ramón Jiménez, y cuando lo encontré como e-libro decidí comprarlo para recordar viejos tiempos. Mi desilusión fue grande cuando me encontré con lo que me pareció más como un trabajo de traducción del libro, que no me permitió leer la obra de corrido.
Por lo tanto, en esta versión de Platero Y Yo debería explicarse en su resumen de presentación que no se trata de la obra original.
