Eskrima stick fighting is indigenous to the Philippines and in the 1950s one of the most popular styles emerged Balintawak. To appreciate Anciong Bacon’s Balintawak Eskrima, you have to understand set-ups, anticipation, the art of outwitting through ruses and lures; economy and simplification of motion, sans lavish and squandered movements; effective strikes fused and bonded with speed, power, elegance and grace. That is the essence of Anciong’s Balintawak and these are the methods Sam Buot explains and demonstrates in this book.
Written from the author’s half-century of personal experience and hard-earned knowledge, Balintawak Eskrima presents the art from origin to modern times, as a fighting art, as cultural tradition and a means of personal development. Illustrated with nearly 700 historical and instructional photographs, this book is a must-have for all martial artists and those interested in the history of a people and their fight art.
Guro Sam Buot is the eldest surviving student of Anciong Bacon’s original Balintawak Eskrima group from Cebu, Philippines. He is a true enthusiast of Filipino martial arts and has served as unofficial historian of the Balintawak style, having studied under the tutelage of Grandmaster Venancio Bacon, Jose Villasin, Teofilo Velez and Teddy Buot since the late 1950s. At 78, Sam is now retired and teaches eskrima in his backyard in Phoenix, Arizona.

Filipino martial arts have many styles. I’m a student of Serrada Escrima developed by Angel Cabalas. Balintawak is another style. After all the Philippines have more than 7000 islands and 100,000,000 people so it’s not unusual that styles would evolve. However I’m finding this book to be very useful. The pictures are very descriptive and movements easy to follow. Any student of Filipino martial arts would enjoy this book. As a side note SpecOps guys get training in these moves. Very useful for real world self defense. Sticks, knives, hands. Stick training translates directly to knives and hands. Also it’s a martial art that anyone at any age over about 16 can practice without worrying about joint injury. I’m an older guy and can’t stand the thought about another orthopedic surgeryProduct details

Balintawak Eskrima eBook Sam Buot Mark Wiley Bobby Taboada Reviews
Excellent book, it's how all martial arts books should be written reviling the master's details and secrets in his art. Thank you Mr. Sam Buot for sharing your knowledge, experience and wisdom in the fascinating Balintawak Escrima art. What I realized over the years and this book helped me too, is that the way one should built his martial arts personality, habits and attitude through the Filipino fighting arts is the same way I want to develop my character and how to confront my life in general. Highly recommended book.
If you are a practicing Balintawak practitioner (like me), a new student, or just someone who's passionate about Filipino Martial Arts then this book is for you. I can't delve too much into the book I don't want to give away any spoilers. But GM Sam's book contains not only the history of our art but also key essentials that you will use to progress through Balintawak such as detailed explanations of the "Grouping system", disarms, empty hand techniques and much more. GM Sam does a fine job condensing his 50+ years of training and experiences into this book. You will not be disappointed.
As a Balintawak Eskrima practitioner and as a direct student of Sam Buot I bought the book as reference to what I was learning. After reading the book not only does it explain about the techniques, but it is rich of information on the history of Balintawak. Sam Buot has a deeper knowledge of the history then I have found out there. I'm glad I got this book, I've read it through and through, and sometimes randomly open it up and read parts of it. This is a must for martial artist and practitioner of Filipino Martial Arts.
I've had the honor to train with Grandmaster Buot - an amazing martial artist and mentor. Attentive readers will be able to pick up a lot of the unique strategies, "tricks" and "secrets" of the art which he shares with his students. Required reading for any Balintawak practitioner, and incredibly useful to FMA practitioners of other styles as well.
This book is only one of two books I would recommend on the Filipino martial arts. It is a very well written, organized and illustrated text that will undoubtedly have a very long shelf life. It is an excellent read and resource whether you play Balintawak or not. There is a good depth of history mixed with the root of Filipino culture and martial art . Mr. Buot provides insight into the background and personalities of its major players combined with the essence of techniques. This combination gives the reader and practitioner a good idea of what the "old style" of Balintawak and the Filipino arts are about. Although not a substitute for having a mentor guiding you through the system, it does provide photographs which give you a snapshot of the efficiency of the techniques and their diversity beyond the solo baston method.
As a practitioner of Balintawak arnis under Grand Master Ver Villasin, the book read like a history of my family. Through his writings, Buot has lifted the veil of secrecy that has been a part of the lore of Balintawak. His intimate knowledge of the history of Balintawak, his personal friendships with Tatay Anciong Bacon and Jose Villasin, and his years of researching and teaching, makes Buot not only and expert, but also one of the best ambassadors of the art. Each chapter in the books covers a particular aspect of the art - from the basic 12 strikes to more advanced "offensive" techniques, both with a stick and empty-hand. His explanations are easy to follow and the photographs are well-done. The book shed light on some of the terms us American-born practitioners did not fully grasp. For most of its existence, Balintawak has not had the same popularity as other forms of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), but this book will change that. Through this book, every FMA practioner can learn to appreciate not only Balintawak but their own style of martial arts.
HANDS DOWN, The best and most concise book written on the Balintawak Style of Eskrima/Arnis!
Balintawak is a highly sophisticated, close quarters, fast paced, and no non-sense form of the Filipino Martial Arts and self-defense. Although the system is principally weapons based, the speed, reflex, and dexterity training immediately translates to the empty hand fighting methodology. Author GM Sam Buot, a student in the original Balintawak club, provides readers with a detailed history and breakdown of the fundamental movements and principles at the core of the founder, GM Venancio Bacon's art. Whether you are a novice or advanced practitioner of Martial Arts seeking solid info on the Balintawak styles or Filipino Martial Arts in general, this book is for you!
